Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about preparation, logistics, and recovery.

Am I a good candidate for plastic surgery?

The best candidates are patients in good general health with realistic expectations. During your in-person or virtual consultation with Dr. Luis Suarez, your goals, medical history, and concerns are reviewed to determine whether plastic or bariatric surgery is appropriate for you.

What should I expect before surgery?

After your initial consultation, several preparation steps may be required depending on your procedure. These can include following a pre-operative liquid diet, adjusting or taking specific medications, stopping smoking, and avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or certain supplements that may increase bleeding or bruising. For some procedures, reducing your Body Mass Index (BMI) may also be necessary before surgery.

Is transportation available from the airport?

Yes. Transportation from San Diego International Airport can be arranged for all patients. Please let your patient coordinator know in advance so transportation to CER Hospital can be scheduled. Transportation from Los Angeles International Airport is also available with an additional charge.

Will I be able to return home the same day?

Many patients undergoing face or breast procedures are able to return home the same day once they are medically stable. Some body procedures require additional monitoring, in which case an overnight hospital stay is recommended.

What should I expect immediately after surgery?

After surgery, you will spend approximately one hour in the recovery room before being transferred to the post-surgical care area. Outpatient patients are usually discharged two to four hours after the procedure, once stable, and must be accompanied by someone who can drive them home. Limiting physical activity during the first days of recovery and following all medication instructions—such as pain management and antibiotics—is essential.

How soon can I return to work?

Most patients are advised to allow at least two weeks of recovery before returning to work. In some cases, if your job does not require physical effort, you may return after one week with restrictions and specific care instructions.
