All You Need To Know About Bichectomy

On your face there is a part called Bichat Bags, some clusters or glands of fat on the cheeks, below the cheekbones without any function. Its extirpation is able to refine and stylize the face, making the cheekbones stand out, something that models and movie actresses often do and that women (and some men too) who want to look more contoured. It is called Bichectomy, one of the most famous cheek surgeries.

Am I A Candidate

It is well known that the main cause of aging on the face of people is due to the loss of subcutaneous tissue (fat under the skin); as the skin ages it becomes more atrophied, the fat disappears, the skin becomes thinner and the muscle is also thinner.

In order for this not to happen, you need to be a candidate, a certified surgeon must evaluate your case and clear you for surgery. Not everybody is eligible for this procedure. We all have the Bichat Bags but we don’t all need them removed. It is important to be educated on the matter before having the surgery done, since the results may not be the ones you want and may end up needing an additional procedure to have it somewhat fixed, but not entirely.

However, in some cases where it may be necessary to sharpen angles of the face, especially in patients who have prominent cheeks that do not slim with weightless or are just hereditary, in those cases the surgery can actually be very helpful, to contour the face, without harming or thinning out the face too much in an unnatural and aging manner.

How Is The Surgery Done?

Bichectomy is done via a small 1-1.5cm incision in the mucous membrane of the mouth (inside of each cheek), leaving no visible scars and causing minimal discomfort to the patient. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic (it can also be undertaken alongside other plastic surgery procedures).

Recovery

Recovery is rapid with little discomfort. Light inflammation in the inner area of the cheeks and minimal pain when eating or chewing during the first few days after surgery. In rare is there bruising, if so it may appear in the lower area of the cheeks. Therefore, application of ice to the area is recommended during the first two days. Patients should stick to a plain diet and avoid any vigorous physical activity that is likely to cause a rise in temperature or exposure to the sun (such as jogging) for the first week. Medication such as analgesics, antiinflammatories, antibiotics will prescribed during the first week. The stitches will usually dissolve on their own.
